Our approach to colour

At Allison & Co, colour is never an afterthought — it’s one of the most powerful tools we use in our designs to shape identity and interest within a space.

Our approach is rooted in an earthy, muted palette inspired by nature. While our schemes often feel calm and understated, this doesn’t mean they are limited to neutrals. Instead, we use colour with intention — layering tones to add interest, warmth and depth while maintaining a timeless, elegant feel.

We believe the most effective interiors use colour in a layered, nuanced way rather than only relying on bold, overpowering statements. Muted blues, mossy greens, warm terracottas, softened ochres and dusky rose tones bring personality and character without overwhelming the room.

We often introduce colour through: Joinery and cabinetry, upholstery and soft furnishings, wallpapers and textiles, artwork and decorative finishes, and subtle architectural details.

These considered applications create rhythm, visual interest and a sense of depth, elevating each interior while preserving a calm, cohesive aesthetic.

Rather than relying on a single bold colour, we build depth through layering multiple tones within the same family. Combined with tactile materials — linen, wool, timber, plaster and patinated metals — this creates interiors that feel rich, textured and considered.

This layered use ensures spaces feel visually engaging while remaining calm, balanced and enduring.

Ultimately, our use of colour is guided by the people who live in the space. Whether inspired by a treasured artwork, a meaningful object, or a tone that evokes a memory or place, we ensure every palette feels personal and authentic.

The result is a home where colour adds warmth, depth and individuality — enhancing the architecture and narrative of the space without ever overpowering it.
